The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) is an organisation that has two main roles. Firstly it aims to provide advice to claimants with a personal injury claim and represent their interests in Parliament. Secondly, APIL provides an accreditation scheme that personal injury solicitors can join if they meet the required standard. This service benefits claimants and solicitors; claimants can identify an accredited personal injury solicitor and know that they will receive a certain level of legal expertise, and personal injury solicitors benefit from the status of being an accredited member of APIL. In order to become a member of APIL, personal injury solicitors must agree to abide by the APIL Code of Conduct and uphold the Consumer Charter. The Consumer Charter includes putting the claimant’s best interests first, providing clear, impartial and honest legal advice, and informing the claimant if they will have to pay any costs to pursue their claim. If the claimant will be responsible for any costs, the APIL personal injury lawyer must give an accurate account of the costs and only charge a fair price with no hidden costs. If they are operating on a no-win, no-fee basis, they must ensure they fully explain the no-win, no-fee agreement to the claimant. In addition, the Consumer Charter states APIL members must not cold call clients or produce false advertising.

Personal injury solicitors will only be accredited by APIL if they meet the required standards of service and expertise. This ensures that when claimants choose a personal injury solicitor because of their APIL accreditation, they will receive an assured level of personal injury advice. A personal injury solicitor will be assessed on their level of client care, their supervision, training and development, quality assurance and monitoring. Once accredited, APIL accredited solicitors can receive ongoing APIL training and will be regularly reassessed.

Claimants are advised to obtain legal advice from a personal injury lawyer who is APIL accredited. They can discover if a solicitor is APIL accredited by looking out for the logo or asking the solicitor in their initial meeting.
